The Odds of Understanding
Summary: You’re a socially anxious individual thrust into a high-profile IPC event, struggling to navigate the overwhelming sea of conversation and charisma. Hiding on the sidelines, you unexpectedly catch the attention of Aventurine, one of the Ten Stonehearts. Known for his charm and cunning, Aventurine approaches you with surprising warmth, drawing you into a conversation that feels effortless despite your anxiety. What starts as a casual interaction turns into a meaningful connection, leaving you with a newfound sense of validation and comfort in your own skin.

Warnings: Brief mentions of anxiety and social discomfort, Minor self-doubt and internalized pressure. Aventurine’s subtle charm may cause emotional swooning!
The gleaming halls of the IPC headquarters buzzed with a steady rhythm of activity, punctuated by the quiet clicks of high heels and the low hum of distant conversations. You stood off to the side, your back pressed against the cool metallic wall, trying to make yourself as small as possible. The sea of sharp-dressed executives and bustling assistants was overwhelming. Words churned in your head—things you could say, ways to start a conversation—but none of them seemed good enough.
Why were you here? You hated events like this, where people’s lives revolved around status, charm, and charisma. Words didn’t come naturally to you; they got stuck in your throat like stones, leaving you frozen and panicked.
Yet, amidst the chaos, a single figure stood out. Aventurine.
He was impossible to miss. His hair was artfully disheveled, his eyes glimmered like exotic jewels, and his dark green and gold attire practically screamed confidence. He looked like he belonged in a deck of cards, a living embodiment of risk and allure.
You knew who he was—everyone did. Aventurine of the Ten Stonehearts, the master strategist whose charm was as infamous as his cunning. He was the kind of person you’d usually avoid. Someone so magnetic, so larger-than-life, that even standing near him would feel like being in the spotlight. But, of course, fate had other plans.
“Ah, hiding in the shadows, are we?” His voice was smooth, with an edge of playfulness that sent a jolt through you. He was standing in front of you now, head tilted slightly, his enigmatic smile firmly in place.
Your stomach dropped. How long had he been watching you?
“N-no, I’m just… um…” The words stumbled out, half-formed and awkward. You wanted to shrink away, but his gaze held you captive.
“Relax,” he said, his tone softer now. “I’m not here to interrogate you. Though I must admit, I’m curious. You don’t seem like the kind of person who frequents places like this.”
Your face burned, and you instinctively looked down, fiddling with the hem of your sleeve. “I-I don’t… usually.”
“Then why are you here?” he asked, leaning casually against the wall beside you. His presence was overwhelming, but not in the way you expected. There was something almost… comforting about the way he angled himself slightly away, giving you space without making it obvious.
“I… I have to be,” you muttered, barely above a whisper. “Work stuff.”
“Ah, the old ‘mandatory appearance’ trap,” he said with a chuckle. “I know it well.”
You glanced at him, surprised. He was looking at the crowd with a distant, almost wistful expression, as if he saw something there that no one else could.
“It’s strange, isn’t it?” he continued. “How people spend so much time trying to impress others, yet half of them are just as uncomfortable as you are.”
You blinked. “You think… other people feel like this?”
He turned to you then, his eyes locking onto yours. “Of course they do. They’re just better at hiding it.”
You wanted to laugh, but it came out more like a nervous exhale. “I’m… not good at hiding it.”
“That’s not a flaw,” he said simply, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. “In fact, I’d argue it’s a strength. You’re genuine, and that’s rare in a place like this.”
You stared at him, unsure of how to respond. His words were unexpected, and they stirred something in you—a flicker of warmth, of validation.
“I… don’t know what to say,” you admitted, your voice trembling slightly.
“Then don’t say anything,” he replied with a grin. “Let me do the talking.”
And he did. For the next few minutes—or was it hours?—Aventurine filled the silence with stories, observations, and lighthearted quips. He never pressured you to respond, never asked more of you than you could give. Instead, he seemed to instinctively understand your limits, guiding the conversation in a way that felt effortless.
Gradually, you found yourself relaxing. You even managed to laugh—a real, genuine laugh—when he recounted a particularly ridiculous tale about a botched negotiation involving a defective shipment of luxury cigars.
“You have a lovely laugh,” he said, almost absentmindedly, as if he hadn’t meant to say it aloud.
Your cheeks flushed, and you quickly looked away. “Th-thank you…”
He tilted his head, studying you with an intensity that made your heart race. “You’re different,” he murmured. “In a good way. Most people I meet… they’re playing the same game, trying to outwit each other. But you? You’re not playing at all. And that makes you far more interesting.”
You didn’t know how to respond to that, so you didn’t. But your silence didn’t seem to bother him. If anything, he looked amused, as if he found your awkwardness endearing.
As the night wore on, the crowd began to thin, but Aventurine stayed by your side. He never once made you feel small or out of place. Instead, he made you feel seen, as if your presence mattered in a way you couldn’t quite comprehend.
When it was finally time to leave, he offered you a small, almost playful bow. “Thank you for indulging me tonight,” he said, his smile softer now, less guarded. “I don’t often find company as refreshing as yours.”
“I didn’t… do much,” you replied, fidgeting with your sleeves again.
He chuckled. “Exactly.”
With that, he turned and disappeared into the crowd, leaving you with a strange, lingering sense of warmth. For the first time in a long time, you didn’t feel like you had failed at something.
Instead, you felt like you had won.

↻ aventurine—the spotlight finds the worthy, but sometimes the spotlight steals, or reflects the light off of another. he is a measly star—and you, his radiant sun. short fic. intimacy & fluff. tw: insecure reader, implied scars from war.
the way aventurine's jewel-like eyes sparkled in the dark, you were certain that one day, a fairy would become envious of his beauty and steal the jewel from his orbs. whimsical was his divinity, shining akin to the moon; simply reflecting the sun off, but radiantly so.
it does not help when his hands gently reach out towards you, soft and warm as they busy themselves with tucking a hair strand behind your ear. you close your eyes, peacefully lead to sleep by the comfort his lingering touch offers, a solemn embrace of love leaving an infinite amount of warmth even where it doesn't touch.
his lips drip with honey, sweet and sticky wherever it goes; still lingering on your tongue from when he had been closer, a few moments ago, the passion everlasting as you feel it's presence in the softness of your lips and the curve of your waist; where your neck ended and where it gave way to supple flesh, all tainted with his holy teeth, leaving behind golden ichor wherever they found home.
but now you would rest; for he held you in his arms so, close enough to melt into him and to ensure inseparability. his breaths came softly, and you could feel the way his chest moved in a symphony of bated breaths, memories replaying over and over again in his mind. he had not went any further then simply kissing you, out of his own insistence—to soothe your aches where they weren't visible but clearly existed. parts of you only he had access to, and hence only his responsibility to look after and love.
the world would look after your achievements and your brightness, but when the sun falls, it goes into the embrace of it's beloved stars. perhaps aventurine was only one star in a fleeting shower of millions, songs upon songs of praise dedicated in honour of their beloved soldier. they would look at his sun's glory and praise its beauty, but they would not know the burns, the scars, the ugliness of your glory and the ugliness of your cruelty.
but he was the star the sun chose, and as long as he was, there were few things he fretted over. the stars never left the sky, although the sun and moon came and went and came and went. and hence, so would his service be to you, his eternal sun, unending and utterly devoted.
his gaze rolled over to your softly shut eyes. a soft breath escapes his lips, and dissolves into the cold air. he smiles, and the ever awake star shines even brighter at night.

ABC / Half-indonesian/chinese half-english white-passing guy here, I really appreciate the amount of love and passion you(you both?) have put into the recent Superman stuff. I'm not personally that deeply a fan of DC, but being able to see characters that I share experiences with - written by people that are also like me - is a beautiful experience.
It's strange being mixed. I'm not quite either. I still feel like an alien intruding in on spaces I shouldn't be in, either way, but.. Clark does too, as does Ms. Liando. Thank you.
P.S; If/when Lois discovers Superman and Clark are one in the same, how would the dynamics shift, and how would it go? If you have any ideas on that.
Aaw thank you so much (indeed we both wrote and drew the comic)! I totally get it. Being mixed third culture kids ourselves, the concept of "belonging" to a community is a complicated one.
Well now I can't give that all away haha! I still have to cook the idea of Clark coming out to Lois as Superman in the oven for a lot longer before I'm ready to write it (mentally, it feels like a relationship milestone that they hit and not a story with themes quite yet), but here's what we're definitely not going to do:
Lois jumps off a building (or puts herself in danger) to force Clark to out himself before he's ready ❌
Lois smugly interrupts Clark before he comes out as Superman, showing off that she knew already ❌❌
Lois gets mad at Clark for keeping secrets ❌❌❌
Lois tries to harm Clark to prove he's Superman ❌❌❌❌
Lois Liando would understand as a fellow immigrant why Superman would hide himself and go by a different name. That's one of the things the Private Interview comic was about after all! They both had secret identities of their own, in different ways. Of course she's curious, but she does respect Superman not wanting to tell her that yet. I like to believe Liando has the emotional intelligence to understand that superheroes keep secret identities to protect people they care about on top of that. And the idea of Liando trying to out an immigrant before he's ready makes no sense to me.
At most I can say she'd feel complicated about it. The closest analogy I can think of is having a queer friend who you've known for years and are super tight with, but they only trusted to come out to you recently. Regardless of how good an ally you are, or if you're queer too, you'd feel complicated about it. Why did it take so long? Did you do something that made them doubt telling you until now? etc. It's important to me that Lois and Clark become really close and have known each other for years before he finally tells her. The slow burn of mutual trust ✅✅
#askjesncin#if I headed a Superman show the entire first season would be Lois and Clark being platonic work partners. no romance until S1 finale#it's the build up of mutual respect in a field they both share WITHOUT attraction in the equation. ✅✅#i imagine the Private Interview is the first time they're both like ?? do I like him??? do I like her?? yeh I'm srs about slow burn

Hello Sweetheart! I have returned once more to lend you an idea, a request if you may—for Mydei. If you’re feeling spicy, you could add Aventurine for some self indulgence on your part. Or a separate character you think would be fitting for the prompt!
I found an audio I thought would be adorable, perhaps our reader reminiscing with their partner or soon-to-be partner. Mutual pinning may work as well… either way! I have a dialog for reference this time around.
Fluffy goodness! Warm laughter, perhaps some sort of confession if they aren’t already established. Up to you! Enjoy 💙🫶
“You’re not what I thought you’d be like”
“Mean and scary?”
“Yeah-“
“Yeah, well. I actually thought, you’d be mean and scary too.”
“Me??”
“Terrifying!”
“You were the one I never knew I needed”
Summary: You and Mydei share a quiet evening after a long day of traveling. While relaxing, you play an old recording where you recall your initial misconceptions about Mydei being "mean and scary," which leads to a playful conversation between the two of you. As the conversation progresses, you confess that Mydei isn’t what you thought he would be, revealing a side of him that is caring and gentle. Both of you reflect on the bond that’s grown between you, with Mydei subtly hinting at his feelings for you, leading to a soft, unspoken confession of mutual affection.

A/N: thank you for the req, love! 🤭💖
The night air in the cozy inn was quiet, save for the crackling of a small fire that warmed the room. You and Mydei sat across from each other, the light flickering gently on his features as you both relaxed after a long day of traveling. The usual tension that came with his presence had melted away, replaced by a warmth that had become more and more familiar over the past few weeks.
You couldn’t help but smile as you listened to the soft hum of the evening. It was hard to imagine that only a short time ago, you’d barely known this man—this fierce warrior who, by all accounts, should have been intimidating, cold, and ruthless. Instead, you’d come to know Mydei as someone who, while still fiercely loyal to his cause, was far more complex, with layers that revealed themselves only to those close to him.
“I found something earlier today,” you said, your voice soft as you glanced at him. “A... recording. It reminded me of you.”
“Oh?” Mydei raised an eyebrow, his interest piqued. “What’s this about?”
You chuckled, shaking your head as you brought up the audio on your device. It was a simple recording, just a little snippet of your voice from a while back, talking to yourself in a way that now seemed amusing. You played it, the words from a much younger you echoing in the room.
"You're not what I thought you'd be like."
“Mean and scary?” Mydei’s voice rumbled through the room, amusement flickering in his eyes as he teased you.
“Yeah—” you heard your younger self say on the recording. “Yeah, well. I actually thought you’d be mean and scary too.”
“Me??” Mydei’s tone was light, a playful challenge in his voice as he leaned forward, meeting your gaze. “Terrifying!”
You couldn’t help but laugh at the way he delivered the line, that same glint of humor now so familiar to you. The recording was an amusing relic of your past assumptions, but now, sitting across from the man who had defied those assumptions in every way, it was a reminder of how far your relationship had come.
“Terrifying, huh?” you teased, leaning back with a smile. “I guess that’s one way to describe you.”
Mydei leaned back in his chair too, his eyes never leaving yours. There was a certain softness to his gaze now, one that made your heart flutter despite yourself. He hadn’t said anything out loud, but his silence spoke volumes.
You cleared your throat, feeling a mix of warmth and uncertainty. “You know… I never thought I’d end up here, with you. You’re not what I thought you’d be like, either.”
He tilted his head, waiting for you to continue.
“I thought you were all sharp edges and cold determination,” you confessed, your voice softer now, “but… there’s a lot more to you than that, isn’t there?”
Mydei’s eyes softened, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips. “I think you’ve seen more of me than anyone else,” he said, his voice low and sincere. “That’s why I’m glad you’re here.”
Your heart skipped a beat at his words, the weight of them not lost on you. You had grown so accustomed to the warrior he appeared to be—fearless, unyielding. But in the quiet moments like this, you saw the man beneath that exterior. The one who cared more deeply than he often let on. The one who had fought for his kingdom, for the people he loved, and for the future he dreamed of.
And maybe, just maybe, for someone like you.
Your gaze met his, and for a moment, neither of you said anything. The silence between you was filled with unspoken understanding.
“Hey,” you broke the quiet, your voice soft. “I… I’m glad you’re not what I thought you’d be.”
His smile widened just a little, a touch of warmth in his eyes. “I’m glad you’re not what I thought you’d be either.”
You laughed softly, the sound filling the room, and for once, it didn’t feel like you were the only one taking a leap of faith. Maybe Mydei wasn’t as terrifying as you thought, and maybe, just maybe, you weren’t the only one who had begun to feel something more.
“So,” you said, your voice teasing as you leaned forward a little, “when are you going to admit that you’ve fallen for me?”
Mydei’s expression shifted, a flicker of uncertainty passing through his eyes, but it was gone so quickly that you almost missed it. He leaned in too, his voice low as he spoke.
“I’d never admit that.”
You raised an eyebrow, surprised. “Oh really?”
“No,” he replied, his gaze meeting yours with such intensity that it stole the breath from your lungs. “Because I’m not sure I need to. Not when you already know.”
And just like that, the last of the tension between you both seemed to dissipate, leaving only the warmth of the fire and the shared understanding in the space between you.
The future—whatever it might hold—seemed a little brighter now.
